Artist Overview
Shuvinai Ashoona, RCA, born 1961 in Kinngait, Nunavut, is a renowned Inuit artist celebrated for her intricate drawings and prints that blend the stark realities of contemporary Arctic life with surreal, fantastical elements. Her pieces often feature detailed landscapes, hybrid figures, and motifs that merge traditional Inuit symbols (like ulus and kudliks) with modern influences, creating a unique visual narrative that explores identity, environment, and imagination.
Ashoona has exhibited internationally, including at the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Biennale of Sydney.
Her works are held in many public collections including those of the National Gallery of Canada, the AGO - Art Gallery of Ontario, the Vancouver Art Gallery and the WAG-Qaumajuq.
