MUSEUM PIECE BY MASTER CARVER TOONOO SHARKY
As the president of inuitsculptures.com, I have the pleasure of searching for and acquiring some of the world’s preeminent pieces of Inuit art.
When I recently found this Toonoo Sharky wolf sculpture, I knew instantly that I had fallen upon his “Opus de Magnus”. This is a large commanding carving. I spent precious time with my camera capturing Wolf’s essence. How could I best showcase this once in a lifetime carving to my discerning clients?
What draws me to “Wolf” is his spirit. What do I mean by that statement?
Our Wolf is not the fairy tale big, bad wolf.
Our Wolf is not a lethal predator.
Our Wolf is diminutive in stature. He is sitting in a childlike pose with legs spread and his arms in a position of dismay. He appears to be frightened and confused and longing for help.
I have never seen a stone as pure as this deep brown marble. The white inlaid eyes contrast starkly against the radiant warm deep chocolate stone. Wolf’s body is crisscrossed with warm tangerine veins creating complexity and depth. The glossy finish gleams and radiates a warm glow.
This piece is simply stunning!
I don’t think I need to say to the knowledgeable collector that this is an investment piece. I have not seen such an alluring and extraordinary carving for sometime.
Sharky’s Wolf deserves its own room. He/she is a once in a lifetime sculpture. Wolf will always attract attention and be the centrepiece of your collection.
I can see this piece as a retirement gift, as an anniversary gift given by children to their parents, or as the featured art in a corporate boardroom.
Toonoo is a prolific master carver and is globally recognized as an important exceptional Inuit carver. His work reflects the Cape Dorset aesthetic. Toonoo is the consummate skilled technician but combines his carving skills with humour and flair. Wolf’s “story” is poignant and topical.
